Nigeria’s major opposition party, the People Democratic Party (PDP), has asked the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele to resign immediately over an alleged fraud.
The party also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest, investigate and prosecute Emefiele over the allegation made by the National secretary of the caretaker committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator John Akpan Udoedehe.
The PDP in a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan stated that the allegation financial recklessness leveled against the CBN governor calls for investigation and prosecution.
Ologbondiyan said; “Our party, the people’s democratic party (PDP) demands the immediate resignation and prosecution of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele,going by allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he superintended over massive looting of funds in the CBN. Our party calls on the Economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC) to immediately invite Emefiele for questioning over allegations by the National Secretary of the illegal APC national national caretaker committee ,Senator John Akpan Udoedehe that the CBN governor supervised over the pillaging of the nation’s vaults under his watch”.
The PDP disclosed that that Nigerians were shocked when senator Akpan Udoedehe, on Channels TV programme “politics today” of Wednesday 15th September 2021 revealed that the CBN governor supervised over the stealing of money in the apex bank, stressing that such a development call for the investigation of the CBN boss by EFCC and if found wanting, he should be prosecuted.
Continuing the Ologbondiyan also stated that aside the allegations of financial impropriety against the CBN governor, that the economy under the APC and Emefiele as CBN governor, there has been collosal failure of monetary and fiscal policies, requiring him to vacate office and hand himself over for investigation.
Finally, the PDP urged the EFCC not to allow the revelation to be swept under the carpet as it borders on “serious economic sabotage which sanctions are clearly spelt out under our laws”.
