A civil society organization, the Centre for Social and Economic Rights (CSER), has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 65th Independence anniversary, praising the nation’s resilience and perseverance in the face of economic challenges. In a press statement issued on October 1, 2025, CSER Executive Director Nelson Ekujumi commended Nigerians for their patience and faith in democracy.

According to Ekujumi, the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including the termination of fuel and forex subsidy regimes, are necessary steps towards a better future. The group expressed optimism in the administration’s capacity to pilot the country’s affairs in line with the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

However, the group also used the occasion to criticize former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his comments on the Lagos State government’s enforcement of building laws. Obi had described the demolitions as “a test of impunity, justice, and compassion.”

Ekujumi stated that Obi’s comments were “reckless, irresponsible, crude, lawless, condemnable, and provocative,” adding that the Lagos State government has the responsibility to uphold law and order. The group cited the Nigerian Urban and Regional Planning Act and a 2003 Supreme Court judgment, which grants states the authority to regulate development control within their territories.

CSER called on Nigerians to caution Obi to retract his statements, which they deemed inciteful against statutory law enforcement by state institutions. The group emphasized the importance of law and order in maintaining peace and prosperity.
