A none governmental organization, Activists for good governance (AAG) has called on federal government to set up judicial panel of inquiry to look into the activities of the disbanded SARS unit of the Nigerian police.
The group made this call during a press conference in Lagos by calling on the government to be more creative in handling the ongoing #EndSars protest by Nigerian youths.
In its statement read by comrade Gbenga Soloki“It is imperative that a comprehensive review and overhaul must be methodic beginning with an in-depth investigation of how the disbanded SARS became the very antithesis of the intent of its founders. We must ask ourselves, how did SARS become an instrument of terror on the people? We must ask, how come the Police High Command never knew of the atrocities perpetrated by officers and men of SARS?
“We are of the view that, the hasty renaming of SARS as another Special Weapon and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T) is a poorly conceived approach to solving an endemic problem. Who are the people to serve in S.W.A.T? Will they be imported from another planet? Our worry is also that the time appears short for due diligence to be conducted as part of the process leading to the setting up of the new outfit. We just don’t want a change in name but a complete reform of the standard operating procedure of the new crime-bursting outfit and indeed the Nigerian Police.”
AGG on the other hand commends the resolute spirit of the Nigerian youths for championing this great cause which has been a bane to the development of our security architecture in The body nevertheless appreciates the prompt response of Nigerian Government to the demands by the citizens for the disbandment of the dreaded and despicable outfit called SARS.
