Yoruba self determination groups under the auspices of the Coalition of Oodua Self determination Groups (COSEG) has thrown their weight behind the call by the Governor of Lagos State for a special status for the state.
COSEG disclosed that due to the population and economic importance of the state to the country, it ought to have been accorded a special status.
The position of the group was made known on Tuesday in Lagos in a press release signed by the chairman of it’s coordinating council, Comrade Dayo Ogunlana, stressing that the federal government in conjunction with the national assembly should commence process of granting the state of aquatic splendour the much awaited special status as former capital of the country and economic hub of the nation.
According to COSEG” Let us once again , join the amiable governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu in his strident call for a special status for Lagos. It’s an established fact that we have been calling on successive government to grant the state special status as former capital of the country. We are also reiterating that based on its significant contribution to economic development of the nation, it deserves to be accorded special recognition in tandem with the practise all over the world.”
Continuing” the national assembly should as a matter of necessity commence the discussion on the need to grant the state special status in the interests of justice and fair play. All the senators and national assembly members from Lagos are enjoined to continue the call for a special status for the state on the floor of the national assembly.
COSEG said” this is not our first time of calling on the government to Accord Lagos this special status with it’s benefits attached. We have at several times did this because of the centeal role Lagos is playing in the economic development of Nigeria.Infact,if Lagos is sick, the whole Nigeria is sick.Lagos therefore needs the attention of all. Not forgetting that it has overtime accommodated all tribes”.
Importantly,it must also be said that during the end sars saga,Lagos was the most hit state. It’s infrastructures and properties were destroyed. We doubt if all that were destroyed had been replaced. It is therefore the central of all activities that eat deep in the growth or otherwise of the country. We must therefore do everything in our hands to protect it’s sancity and development.
COSEG finally call on eminent Nigerians to join the governor on the call for a special status for the state.
